Final Semester ReflectionThis class was challenging to me because I am not good at remembering names of important people, nor dates of historic events. I have enjoyed learning about our history, and our struggle to get to where we are. I have been re-educated on events that I vaguely remember from high school, and my interest has been sparked by seeing how the past has shaped us to where we are today. I believed that the past was so far ago, and mindsets were very different from where we are today, however, the state of current events seemed to correlate with events from the past such as voter disenchantment leading to the rise of racists, and president’s power struggle over the legislative and judiciary branch. History does in fact repeat itself, but history doesn’t teach you how to keep us from making the same mistakes, it simply gives you a warning of what is to come. I have learned to take better notes from what I’m used to taking, but I still struggled with the quizzes because I simply did not know what parts to focus on, and what parts were not important enough to be on a quiz. I am good at understanding the whole picture, and follow the domino effect of events that led up to one another, but I found myself growing tired and losing focus when learning about battles won and lost, instead I focus on who won the actual war – details exhaust me and put me to sleep. I enjoyed reading through our textbook, however part of the reason I had trouble with dates was because it would jump around. I tend to read books as stories that go from beginning to end, and this textbook is written in the form of different stories that take place in the same era that are told individually. I believe I could have better followed the timeline if I would have realized that earlier in the semester, than at the very end. I will look for that in future books that may share the same framework. I loved the Videos in wrapping up the chapters I read, it was the finishing touch to understanding what I read in our text-book that polished off anything I might not have fully understood, or did not go into detail in the text-book. They also provided fun content for the document interpretation – which I loved reading and analyzing. Crash-course also has other subjects aside from History that I fully plan on using for Biology and Physics in the future. This was a good reminder that sources you find to better understand assignments don’t need to be boring. This is not a class I would have chosen had it not been required, but even from the beginning, I realized I would do a lot of learning, and aside from the quizzes, it wasn’t painful at all. What I would do differently, is I would have quoted more of Celia, a Slave in our last assignments.
